February 2006 E-Newsletter

Latinitas is now publishing both Latinitas and Teen Latinitas each month. In the past, these two publications were each refreshed every other month, but thanks to a growing number of adult and youth editorial volunteers - these two forums for Hispanic youth are truly monthly publications!

Please consider donating to Latinitas to support our youth writers!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kat Gonzales, TRIP Coordinator

Kat Gonzales, a senior journalism major at the University of Texas Austin has been an exemplorary volunteer for Latinitas. Though Kat has been helpful at Latinitas' workshops and fundraising events, she makes her biggest impact leading Latinitas Teen Reporter Intern Program at Travis High School every Wednesday afternoon during the school year, training young Latinas to become the next generation of anchorwomen, reporters, producers and more.

Kat Gonzales

"Kat's a wonderful leader, and she knows how to make TRIP both fun and educational for the girls. They really look up to her and seek her advice." says her co-faciliator Sandie Taylor. TRIP member Juanita "Nori" Vasquez says because of Kat, TRIP "is like girl's night out every week."

Planning to graduate next Fall, Kat is currently interested in exploring a professional path in journalism. She is passionate about civil rights expressing those beliefs in modern ballet dance. She was also integral in planning last year's Middle Eastern journalism forum at UT. Her dedication to the young women in TRIP has been an invaluable gift to Latinitas and we thank her for, frankly, just being herself.
