WEB DESIGN 101 FOR GIRLS, TEENS, AND NOW, THEIR MOMS
Each third Saturday of the month Latina girls and their families gather at the Pan American Recreation Center (2100 East 3rd Street) for informational meetings on family safety and home-ownership as part of the Strengthening the Family Series. Because of the enthusiasm of Latinitas' volunteer staff, free web design workshops are offered for Latina youth. Hosted by the Hispanic Women's Network of Texas, this special monthly event features something for the entire family. While parents learn about financial planning, their daughters are invited to design and publish their own websites. The first part of the workshop, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, will be devoted to girls ages 9 to 14, and the second workshop, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, will be dedicated to teens. In November, Latinitas will host a workshop for adult women as well. For more information about enrolling in a Latinitas web workshop (gratis!) email latinita@hotmail.com. Next workshop takes place on November 20th.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: ALICIA ARTEAGA-WILSON
Alicia Arteaga-Wilson is a role model and she doesn't even know it! Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, Alicia graduated from Edinburg high school and, shortly after, enlisted in the U.S. army. While she was stationed in Germany for two years, she was able to travel all over Europe. Finished with her commitment, Arteaga-Wilson returned to the U.S. and married Kelvin Wilson. Setting her sights on a degree, Alicia returned to school as a non-traditional student and majored in Advertising at University of Texas in Austin in 2002. Reflecting on her own years as a Latina jovene, Alicia says, though she's all Texan, she may be a New Yorker at heart! "As a pre-teen, I often fantasized of becoming a New York City hair stylist! Even though I'd never visited the city, I'd always felt the connection, energy and love for it. In my heart, I'm a New Yorker raised in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas." On being a teen, Alicia said body image was an issue for her. Unlike most teens and women who complain of too much weight, Alicia was always on the other side, being called " flacita" or "flaca" which she hated. "I wanted to shop in the teen section and not the little girls department. I just wanted to fit in." On who is her role model, Alicia mentions her sister Annabelle, her friend and mentor. "In the short nine years or so that we've lived in the same city again, I have learned and changed so much due to her undying support and continuous crafting." Alicia says. On her commitment to Latinitas where she serves in multiple capacities including on the board of directors and as our photo editor, Alicia says "I relate to Latinita's because it advocates empowerment, culture, options, education, and addresses a lot of the real-life issues I struggled with as a pre-teen. I really believe I would have made different choices if there had been an organization like Latinitas that I could have grown up with." We are thrilled with Alicia's dedication, support and keen creativity and look forward to more great photo essays on her behalf!
